This playlist consists of Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" record and John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme. These two albums ARE jazz. If no two other Jazz albums existed all of Jazz could be synthesized from these two records. Kind of Blue probably has the best line up of any album ever, Miles on trumpet, Coltrane on sax, Paul Chambers on Bass and Bill Evans on piano. Thats like Hendrix, Bonham, Claypool, and Dylan writing an album together. The tracks on kind of blue are also incredibly listenable, So What and Blue in Green being two of the best known jazz tracks ever (Take Five by Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond is another.)
Then there is A Love Supreme. Definitely more "out there" than Kind of Blue, but it has more feeling in many ways. Trane was a technically superior player to Davis at his instrument, although his pieces have less form and melody than Davis, they meander. Coltrane was a free jazz man, and free jazz can be difficult. Luckily, A Love Supreme is the best free jazz ever stamped on wax. Listen to the piano solo on Resolution, and just any time Coltrane hits a high note. Also listen to how furiously he attacks the sax.
Haitian fight song is just a gimme, great song by the greatest upright bass player. (Jaco Pastorius has him beat for greatest all time, but he played electric.)
